A play about a love affair between famous philosopher and Nazi Party member Martin Heidegger and a female academic of Jewish origin opens at the Dramatyczny Theater in Warsaw Jan. 10.

The Banality of Love, by Israeli writer Savyon Liebrecht, translated into Polish by Michał Sobelman, tells the story of the close friendship between Hannah Arendt and Heidegger, one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century. The title alludes to one of Arendt’s books entitled Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil.

Arendt and Heidegger first met in 1924 in Fribourg in Switzerland and remained friends until Arendt’s death in 1975. Arendt had only just started college when she met Heidegger, who was a married man and a respected professor of philosophy who became fascinated by Nazi ideology. Arendt was of Jewish origin. Despite that, they were attracted to each other. They began an affair that later changed into a long-lasting friendship.

Journalist and author Savyon Liebrecht was born in Munich to a family of Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivors. Her play proved controversial in Israel.

The Banality of Love (Polish title: Rzecz o banalno¶ci i miło¶ci) is directed by Wawrzyniec Kostrzewski and stars Halina Skoczyńska, Adam Ferency, Martyna Kowalik and Mateusz Weber.
