The Polish government expects some 40 shale gas exploration drillings in 2014 and hopes the first commercial drilling to take place at the end of the year, Environment Minister Maciej Grabowski told public radio PR1 on Thursday.

"I reckon that some 40 drillings will take place this year," Grabowski said. "I expect that the first commercial drilling will take place at the end of this year. What I mean is shale gas suitable for sale, not exclusively for the purpose of testing."

The assessment of Poland's shale gas resources requires some 200-300 drillings, Grabowski said citing experts.

Shale gas output on industrial scale is "a distant future," the minister added.
