Card Games at Poster Museum
January 30, 2014
A new exhibition at the Wilanów Poster Museum in Warsaw explores the world of card games.
Entitled Games of Imagination, the exhibition includes reprints of vintage card decks, showing how playing cards have evolved since the 16th century.
Visitors to the museum can see cards designed by artists and fashion gurus such as Salvador Dali, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, Piotr Młodożeniec and even by the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II. There are some rare and valuable decks on show, many of which are sought-after collectors’ items.
Part of the exhibition comprises items loaned by Andrzej Rzepkowski, an avid collector of playing cards who has for years been collecting prized decks and playing card accessories as well as works of art and other objects that feature cards. Rzepkowski’s collection includes posters, old prints, card dealing devices and casino-style neckties and vests whose design features playing cards.
The exhibition is accompanied by a range of events, including card designing workshops for children and lectures on the history of playing cards.
Until March 2
