January 22, 2014
French retailer Auchan got regulatory approval to buy Real hypermarkets in Poland from German group Metro AG, under condition of selling eight of them, antitrust watchdog UOKiK said in a statement.
After the merger, Auchan will become Poland's second biggest retailer, with revenues to the tune of PLN 12 billion (based on 2012 data).
The transaction between Auchan and Metro AG concerned 57 Real hypermarkets in Poland. Auchan will have 18 months to find a buyer for the eight hypermarkets.
Auchan currently controls 27 hypermarkets in Poland and a number of smaller shops.
In late November 2013 Auchan bought Real hypermarkets of Metro AG located in Central and Eastern Europe for EUR 1.1 billion. The transaction encompasses Metro AG operations in Poland, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine.
