Theater Meets Music

Article's tools:

An inventive project staged in three Polish cities combines the latest play by Austria’s Elfriede Jelinek, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, with Polish alternative music.

Directed by leading Polish theater director Maja Kleczewska, Shadows. Eurydice Speaks includes music by Katarzyna Nosowska, the charismatic vocalist of the hugely popular rock group Hey. Nosowska is one of the biggest names on Poland’s rock scene with a number of successful solo albums to her name.

Inspired by Jelinek’s drama, Nosowska has written several new compositions especially for the play and performs them live in the production. Additional music is provided by Paweł Krawczyk, Hey’s lead singer.

According to Kleczewska, Jelinek deconstructs the myth of Eurydice as a submissive woman in love. “Orpheus’s love is about vanity. He thinks the world sees him as a pop star and considers himself his wife’s savior,” she said. “He strives to sing his way to the impossible: the resurrection of Eurydice.”

A joint project by Warsaw’s Imka Theater, the Hieronim Konieczko Theater in Bydgoszcz, and the Capitol Music Theater in Wrocław, Shadows. Eurydice Speaks premieres March 20 at the Capitol with additional performances at the Polski Theater in Bydgoszcz March 26 and 27, and at the Imka Theater on June 3 and 6.
