The Artist and His Alter Ego

In a brilliant new piece by talented composer, artist, and playwright Bogusław Schaeffer, his alter ego takes the stage. Ostatnia sztuka (The Last Play), opens March 1 at the Powszechny Theater in Warsaw.

Written on two levels of consciousness, the play can be read as the culmination of Schaeffer’s philosophy of theater and art, while simultaneously exploring the process of creating a theatrical piece itself.

Schaeffer presents us with scenes that overlap, comment on, and ultimately communicate with each other. Exploring new formal and visual ideas, the playwright allows the actors to improvise and freely interpret the story. The result is an abstract comedy performed in Schaeffer’s distinctive idiosyncratic style.

Directed by the Schaeffer himself with an original score, Ostatnia sztuka stars Grzegorz Matysik and Bogdan Słomiński.
