Renate Jett, an Austrian actress, singer and songwriter, chats with Jolanta Wolska.

What brings you to Warsaw?
I came to perform in the play (A)Pollonia, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski at the Nowy Theater.

Are Polish audiences different to those in other countries?
This is not the first time I have performed in Poland. I love Polish audiences because they are one of the most sensitive audiences in Europe. They are like a sponge and absorb everything, they have depth. When I perform here I feel that I have a meaningful dialogue with the audience.

Do you feel Polish people are creative?
Polish people have an amazing drive to express themselves in all arts. You can feel creativity everywhere here.

Have you noticed changes since when you first came here in 2001?
Yes, I feel that today more people speak English and they are much more friendly in shops than in the past. Polish families seem to be close to each other, although I notice that Poles generally do not talk to strangers and are reserved towards them, albeit generally friendly. The city today feels safe, unlike 12 years ago.

Do you have favorite places in Warsaw?
I usually don’t stay long enough to have much time to be a tourist. But I used to like taking my dog for walks along the Vistula River and to walk in the many parks around Warsaw.

What’s your favorite Polish food?
I like borsch very much and all sorts of salads here.
