Victims of Irony
March 27, 2014
Article's tools:

A new adaptation of Moliere’s masterpiece The Misanthrope opens this March at Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater.

With a fresh translation by Polish actor Jerzy Radziwiłłowicz and directed by Grzegorz Chrapkiewicz, it promises a novel approach to the bright, witty comedy.

Although Moliere wrote the play three centuries ago, the play still has much to say to us today. Beneath the wigs, frills, and face powder of his aristocratic characters are the people we see around us today, that is to say: ourselves.

Alceste, who views himself as a man of principle with a keen disdain for high society, falls in love with Célimene, a social-climbing, calculating coquette. She is everything he claims to detest, yet he cannot help himself. A comic victim of an ironic love, Alceste is forced to rethink his formerly cynical views of society, people in general, and ultimately, himself.
