The world’s oldest international organization, the International Telegraph Union (ITU), was founded on May 17, 1865 in Paris. The ITU, now the International telecommunication Union, currently has 193 member countries and is a specialized United Nations agency. Its tasks include standardization and regulation of the telecommunication and radio communication market. Eight years ago the UN General Assembly marked the establishment of the ITU by designating May 17 as World Information Society Day, emphasizing the importance of the information society in today’s world.

In Poland, which became a member of the ITU in 1921, World Information Society Day events, which take place from April to June, have gained a reputation as something of an information technology fiesta. Many nationwide events, conferences and IT courses for young people are held during this time.

A key event this year is a conference entitled Power Grid Digitization, organized by the Polish IT Society (PTI). The conference will be held May 13 at the Institute of Mathematical Machines in Warsaw.
