Pinocchio and a Quest for Identity
April 30, 2014
Article's tools:

A new version of the classic fairy-tale Pinocchio will be the first children’s play to be staged by the Nowy Theater in Warsaw.

Under Krzysztof Warlikowski, one of Poland’s best and most internationally acclaimed theater directors as its artistic director, the Nowy Theater has made a name for itself with innovative productions. The new version of Pinocchio is based on a stage adaptation by Joel Pommerat of the classic tale by Italian writer Carlo Collodi.

The theater says the production will be “neither about being a good boy, nor about learning humility, nor about becoming normal.” Instead, it will explore “the eternal craving for freedom, rebellion and the boundaries of identity, including one’s own body.”

In the play, directed by Anna Smolar, Pinocchio struggles to become an independent human being, which also means taking control over his own body. Accordingly, he appears on stage as a puppet controlled by a puppeteer. Like many contemporary children, he gets the idea that money means freedom. Lies become his only way of escaping the poverty in which he lives with his father. Embarrassed about being poor, he starts to lie and to lose himself in the lies. But then he meets a fairy godmother who shows him the way back to his father.

The sets have been designed by Anna Met and the music has been written by Natalia Fiedorczuk, who will perform it live with Karolina Rec.

The show is intended for children aged eight and over.
Upcoming performances: May 31 (opening), June 1 and 3-7
Nowy Theater; 10/16 Madalińskiego St.
