Child sex abuse victim sues Poland’s Roman Catholic Church
February 10, 2014
In an unprecedented case, a Polish man is suing the Roman Catholic Church for child sex abuse.
Never before has a civil suit been launched against the church as an institution, previously all lawsuits have been directed against individual perpetrators.
“Marcin K,” 25, is asking 47,500 euros for sex abuse suffered between 1999 and 2001. “Father Zbigniew R” was convicted and is already serving two years in jail.
Although the Roman Catholic Church denies responsibility for acts of individual priests, the UN Council on the Rights of the Child has criticized the Holy See for its negligence in preventing would-be pedophiles from abusing children, insisting the Vatican “immediately remove” all suspected pedophiles from the clergy.
