Stream of Consciousness Painting
June 3, 2014
The Seasonal Colors exhibition at the 81 Stopni Gallery brings together acrylic and oil paintings on canvas by Ewelina So¶niak.
The exhibition highlights the artist’s favorite themes. So¶niak likes to compare her work to the Japanese literary genre Zuihitsu, whose name is derived from the Japanese words for “to follow” and “brush.” This form of writing resembles a stream of consciousness where the writer jots down whatever springs to his or her mind in a given moment. Similarly, So¶niak uses her paintbrush to paint the images that flash before her eyes, triggered by other pictures and by various motifs and situations.
Noting that images enter people’s minds through the eyes, So¶niak says that we all have a photosensitive visual memory and that images spring to our minds automatically. “Some of them keep coming back while others just disappear forever,” So¶niak says.
