Dreams vs. Reality

Two new plays at the Powszechny Theater explore why people decide to go for their dreams at a certain point in their lives and what can happen along the way.

Dziewczyny do wzięcia (Girls Up for Grabs), directed by Piotr Ratajczak, is a stage adaptation of a Polish movie of the same name that Janusz Kondratiuk directed in the 1970s. The protagonists are three small-town girls who come to Warsaw for the day. They see the capital as a city of opportunities where anything can happen. They dream of meeting someone interesting, or even finding true love. The play shows what can happen when dreams run up against real life.

Dziewczyny do wzięcia is a story of a world divided into big cities and the provinces. It hints that the differences between people from these two backgrounds are slowly disappearing.

Upcoming performances: June 15, 5 p.m., June 17 and 18, 7:30 p.m.

The Powszechny Theater is also staging Jacobi and Leidental, by one of Israel’s most prominent playwrights, Hanoch Levin.

Directed by Marcin Hycnar, this is a story of two friends who spend years drinking tea together and playing dominoes. Things take an unexpected turn when one of them decides to live life to the full. The play shows the consequences of this decision, asking whether happiness is really so easy to attain.

Upcoming performances:
June 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 26 and 28, 7:30 p.m.
