Jose Cura in Sopot
June 3, 2014
Article's tools:

Argentinian tenor José Cura is coming to Poland to give a concert with a lineup of special guests at the Opera Leśna (Forest Opera) in the coastal town of Sopot.

Regarded as one of the best contemporary opera tenors, Cura is often compared to the famous Three Tenors—Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti. The concert in Sopot, entitled Jose Cura and His Guests, will be the Argentinian’s first performance in Poland in many years and promises to be a spectacular event with a fine selection of opera and operetta arias, in addition to Neapolitan and Latino songs. At one point Cura will take over as the conductor, revisiting his time as the conductor of Poland’s Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra between 2001 and 2004.

Cura will be sharing the stage with tenor Bogusław Morka, who is the artistic director of the concert in Sopot, and soprano Agnieszka Kozłowska, a soloist with the Warsaw Chamber Opera. The three singers will be accompanied by the orchestra of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk, conducted by Ernst van Tiel.

Cura was born in 1962 in Rosario, in the Santa Fe province of Argentina. He debuted as a conductor at the tender age of 15 and a year later started taking piano lessons and turned out to be a talented composer as well. As a teenager, he was a keen athlete and even considered a career as a professional rugby player. He gave up the idea to dedicate himself to music.

Cura’s trademarks are his velvety voice and his intense performances in operatic roles. He is the first opera performer to sing and conduct an orchestra at the same time. His versatility, charisma and talent pack out houses wherever Cura performs around the world.
