Polish police detained on Monday near the southern city of Cracow a Polish catholic priest Wojciech G. (full name withheld under Polish law) on suspicion he sexually abused children in the Dominican Republic.
The 36-year-old priest, who used to lead a parish in the highland town of Juncalito, has been under investigation by the Polish prosecutors since September. He allegedly molested several children for several years.
“We received documents from the Dominican Republic that, among other things, will allow us to press charges," Przemyslaw Nowak, spokesman for the District Public Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.
Wojciech G. will be formally questioned and charged on Tuesday, Nowak said.
The priest denied any wrongdoing in a televised interview in October, suggesting he was set up by local drug gangs.
