Existentialism at the Dramatyczny

With a new season around the corner, Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater is preparing a production combining two one-act plays by two Paris-based existentialists who won the Nobel Prize for literature: Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit (1944) and Samuel Beckett’s Play (1962).

Both plays are set in a hotel room with two women and a man. The characters do not know why they are there. They start watching, examining and becoming fascinated with one another. With each minute the atmosphere in the room becomes heavier and the tension rises. A game begins. The first questions are asked and accusations are made. Nobody in the room has a clear conscience, everyone is hiding a dark secret. Have they really met there by chance?

“Both playwrights try to create a vision of an atheist hell. Two ideas, two images. A fascinating juxtaposition of two different imaginations,” says Antoni Libera, a Polish writer who translated both plays. No Exit ends where Play begins—the characters, trapped within their own memories, are doomed to sleeplessness and the tormenting presence of other people.

No Exit/Play is directed by Barbara Sass. The stage design and costumes are by Paweł Dobrzycki. The music was composed by Michał Lorenc. The show features actors including Piotr Grabowski, Agnieszka Wosińska, Agnieszka Warchulska (both pictured) and Michał Podsiadło.

Upcoming shows: Sept. 26 (premiere) and Sept. 30, 7:30 p.m. at the Dramatyczny Theater in Warsaw (Halina Mikołajska Stage), Palace of Culture and Science, 1 Defilad Sq.
