The Muranów movie theater is inviting opera lovers in Warsaw to come and watch two operas staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

On Sept. 14 the theater will screen Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello, conducted by Semyon Bychkov and featuring a galaxy of stars, including Johan Botha as the jealous Moorish general and Renée Fleming as the innocent Desdemona. The cunning, villainous Iago is played by Falk Struckmann, and Michael Fabiano plays the part of Cassio.

On Sept. 28 audiences in Warsaw will be able to watch Roméo et Juliette, an opera written by Charles-Francois Gounod, based on William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The performance, conducted by Placido Domingo at the Metropolitan Opera, will feature big-name Met artists Anna Netrebko and Roberto Alagna in the leading roles.

The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD project was launched in 2006 with a broadcast of The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The project proved a box-office success, and soon many cinemas and theaters joined in, including venues outside the United States.
