When literary giants meet
March 12, 2014
A new drama about the contrasting personalities of two authors who redefined Polish literature in the 20th century has opened at Narodowy Theater.
Written and directed by Maciej Wojtyszko, Dowód na istnienie drugiego (Evidence the Other Exists) focuses on meetings between Witold Gombrowicz and Sławomir Mrożek in France and Italy in 1965 and 1966. The play shows Gombrowicz as a gregarious figure, and Mrożek as a private person who avoids conflict. Where Gombrowicz is provocative, Mrożek is quiet and reticent.
Through the interactions between the two men, Wojtyszko explores profound thoughts and ideas that apply not only to these two writers, but have meaning for all people, at any time in history.
