Poland marks 15 years of NATO membership
March 13, 2014
Poland marked, on March 12, the fifteenth anniversary of Poland's NATO accession by holding a number of state ceremonies in Warsaw.
The main ceremony was held on Piłsudskiego square. Earlier President Bronislaw Komorowski met with ambassadors of the NATO countries accredited in Poland.
Also yesterday, lower house Sejm passed NATO anniversary resolution.
“The Polish Sejm recognizes Poland's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance as a mainstay of Poland's national security alongside membership in the European Union”, the resolution read.
The resolution reminds that in the 1990s all political forces in Poland backed the country's NATO accession regardless of political differences, which enhanced the accession process.
"The main political forces in the 1990s displayed a political maturity which led to the materialisation of one of the fundaments of Polish statehood", the resolution read.
Formerly a Warsaw Pact nation, Poland joined NATO in 1999.
