Drunk on Music

A bittersweet musical based on songs by American singer-songwriter Tom Waits kicks off a new season at the Narodowy Theater in Warsaw.

The Drunk Piano tells the story of a group of people from the small town of Witthier, southern California, where Waits grew up. The peculiar characters in the play include a sleepwalking vegetable stall owner and a barber who likes to get drunk in the back of his shop. Singing songs penned by Waits, they share their stories of soul-searching journeys, love affairs, both profound and fleeting ones, and desire. The intense emotions are reflected in the music. The characters have secrets that will get revealed once a long-awaited visitor arrives.

The show was written and directed by Marcin Przybylski, an actor, director and a teacher at the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw.

Przybylski stars in the show himself along with a fine cast of actors such as Anna Chodakowska, Monika Dryl and Karol Dziuba.

The Waits songs were translated into Polish by Roman Kołakowski and given new arrangements by Andrzej Perkman. The sets were designed by Anna Skupień and Katarzyna Szczurowska.
