EU Job for Poland’s Deputy PM
New European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker has picked Polish deputy prime minister and infrastructure and development minister Elżbieta Bieńkowska as the next EU commissioner for the internal market, industry and enterprise.

Bieńkowska’s post is regarded as one of the most important jobs in the European Commission and until now, it has usually gone to politicians from Western Europe.

Bieńkowska will be responsible for removing barriers on the EU single market. Polish businesses say such barriers frequently put them at a disadvantage in competing with companies from the “old” EU member states. Compared to her French predecessor, Bieńkowska will have more responsibilities as the commissioner in charge of industry. Observers believe that this will be of key importance, as the EU’s approach to industry is closely linked to environmental protection issues. In a bid to fight climate change, environmentalists have been pushing for stricter environmental norms that are seen by industry as a threat, especially in the less developed EU member states.

Earlier this year, The Warsaw Voice handed Bieńkowska its Chair of the Year award.

Polish Embassy in Iraq Evacuated

Staff at the Polish embassy in Baghdad were evacuated in early September by the Polish air force due to the dangerous situation in Iraq, officials said.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski decided to close the Polish embassy in the Iraqi capital as of Sept. 9 until further notice. The three-day evacuation operation involved two C-130E Hercules aircraft.

The Foreign Ministry has urged Polish citizens not to travel to Iraq.
