Article's tools:

The Polish authorities have arrested a Polish army officer and a lawyer suspected of spying for Russia.

The Internal Security Agency (ABW) arrested the men Oct. 15 using information gathered by Poland’s military counter-intelligence service. The lawyer was detained for three months and faces charges of working for a foreign intelligence service. A citizen of both Poland and Russia, he was reportedly part of a legal team carrying out work related to an LNG terminal in the Polish sea port of ¦winouj¶cie. When completed, the terminal will be of key importance to Poland’s energy security, helping the country to become less dependent on gas supplies from Russia.

The other detained man, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, worked at Poland’s Defense Ministry. He is suspected of supplying classified material to the Russians, for which he allegedly received a total of around zl.100,000.

Poland is likely to soon expel several Russian diplomats suspected of being spies.

Commenting on the arrests, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said he was highly satisfied with how the Polish counter-intelligence service handled the case.
