Award-winning play Red by American writer John Logan has opened at Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater.

Logan’s writing credits include screenplays for the blockbusters Aviator, Skyfall and Gladiator.

Red is about legendary American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. Rothko was underestimated by critics and struggled with depression and alcoholism, as well as with new trends in art that he could not understand. Red is set in Rothko’s studio in New York City and recounts the brilliant painter’s final days before he committed suicide.

One day, Rothko is visited by a young student and admirer. Audiences at the Dramatyczny Theater see how master and apprentice meet for the first time to discuss a series of paintings commissioned by the Four Seasons restaurant. The relations between the two men shift from friendliness to anger, anxiety and disbelief. As the two talk to each other, their conversation turns into a confrontation between two generations of artists.

Red won Logan America’s prestigious Tony award for best play in 2010. The Warsaw production is directed by Agnieszka Lipiec-Wróblewska with a Polish translation by Rubi Birden. The play is being staged at the Dramatyczny Theater’s Halina Mikołajska Stage and stars Janusz R. Nowicki as Rothko and newcomer Julian ¦wieżewski as the student.
