Tom Waits in Polish

The Narodowy Theater in Warsaw is staging a bittersweet musical that should be of special interest to fans of American singer-songwriter Tom Waits, but those who are less familiar with his songs will enjoy it as well.

Entitled Fortepian Pijany (The Piano Has Been Drinking), the two-hour show features songs penned by Waits that have been given new arrangements by Andrzej Perkman and translated into Polish by Roman Kołakowski.

The setting is a small town in California populated by a range of peculiar characters who are keen to share the stories of their lives, or rather of the wreckage of their lives. They sing stories of disillusionment and failure as they try to survive and turn bitterness into hope.

Performed by Narodowy Theater actors Anna Chodakowska, Monika Dryl and Jacek Różański, Fortepian Pijany also features recent graduates of the National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw. Marcin Przybylski, a versatile artist and performer, not only wrote and directed the new musical, but also appears and sings in it himself. The songs in the play each tell a different story, but Przybylski has woven them together into a fascinating, if melancholic, show with a touch of bittersweet humor. Songs featured in the show include “Martha,” “Grapefruit Moon,” “Sea of Love,” “Face to the Highway” and “Underground.”

Fortepian Pijany delivers classy entertainment through powerful songs, a compelling story, great acting and impressive sets designed by Anna Skupień and Katarzyna Szczurowska.
