Polish Jazz in China
December 1, 2014
Article's tools:

Polish jazz band Imagination Quartet proved a hit when they played three concerts in southern China in October.

The four young musicians wowed audiences that rarely get to see live performances by music acts from Poland, playing at one of China’s largest jazz festivals, the Oct-Loft in Shenzhen. They gave two more performances at festivals in the cities of Zhongshan and Guangzhou. All three concerts were played to full houses. In Shenzen, Imagination Quartet performed before around 400 listeners, which was a record turnout at this year’s Oct-Loft festival. Music journalist Josef Ho wrote in a local newspaper that the concert started off on a quiet note, but towards the end it looked more like a rock gig. The audiences danced and clapped their hands and the guitarist jumped around the stage with his shirt off, Ho noted.

Imagination Quartet was formed in 2009 in Warsaw by Michał Sołtan (guitar), Damian Pińkowski (sax), Dariusz ¦witalski (bass) and Maciej Dziedzic (drums) and have since played at a number of international jazz festivals. While they take generously from classic jazz, the musicians defy convenient pigeonholing. Their jazz is energetic and influenced by experimental and improvised performances with a rock sound thrown in for good measure.

The three concerts in China were held under the auspices of the Polish embassy in Beijing, the Polish Institute in the Chinese capital and the Polish Consulate General in Guangzhou.
