Polish jazz performer Grażyna Augu¶cik has a new album out with an inventive combination of jazz, classical music and folk tunes.

Entitled Grażyna Augu¶cik Orchestar—Inspired by Lutosławski, the album was recorded jointly with a select group of Polish musicians. “Orchestar” stands for three bands: the Jan Smoczyński Trio, the Atom String Quartet and the Janusz Prusinowski Trio. The album tracks were written by Smoczyński, who was inspired by the work of the late Witold Lutosławski—a towering presence in Polish music and regarded by many as the country’s greatest 20th-century composer. Lutosławski often incorporated Polish folk music into his work while the three bands featured on Augu¶cik’s album blend folk with classical and jazz sensibilities. Singing with the three bands, Augu¶cik chooses different vocal techniques to best suit the individual tracks. The album gets the most interesting on tracks where all the musicians play together and synthesize the different music styles into a new, unique sound. These tracks clearly echo Lutosławski’s original compositions and his folk inspirations.

Grażyna Augu¶cik Orchestar—Inspired by Lutosławski has been released by Polish label ForTune.

Grażyna Augu¶cik has lived in Chicago in the United States since the 1990s. She is a composer, music producer and arranger who has invented a unique and instantly recognizable style of vocal interpretation. Augu¶cik fronts several bands and is considered an intriguing jazz performer by many critics.
