Royal Gardens of Light

Two gigantic light installations have turned the Wilanów district of Warsaw into the brightest spot in town this winter.

The Garden of Imagination and the Golden Courtyard installations are mounted in the garden and courtyard of the Museum of the Palace of King Jan III Sobieski at Wilanów. The Garden of Imagination is made up of over 300,000 colorful LED lights arranged in Baroque patterns, modeled on the summer arrangement of flowers and other vegetation in the garden. The lights and effects in the Garden of Imagination change to the sound of music: Johann Pachelbel’s Canon; Waltz No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich; and Music for the Royal Fireworks by George Frideric Handel.

The Golden Courtyard installation depicts a fountain and a six-horse royal coach, alluding to ceremonial parades staged by Jan III Sobieski, the king of Poland in 1674-1696, who would ride up to the palace in lavishly ornamented coaches.

The light extravaganza at Wilanów includes an artistic video and music 3D mapping show, with images projected onto the facade of the Baroque palace in Wilanów. Packed with impressive special effects, the show makes the facade come to life and presents audiences with a variety of scenes, such as the arrival of the king’s entourage and grand balls that used to be held at the palace.
