Don Juan, a new play being staged by Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater, throws the famous libertine from the play by Moliere into a world straight from the films of director Ingmar Bergman.

The play explores subjects such as infidelity, the agony of love and the metaphysical order of things to give a new context to Moliere’s comedy. It combines movie-like narration with the props and conventions of puppet theater.

Directed by Ewa Piotrowska, the new play was written by Marcin Bartnikowski, who also designed the sets and plays Ingmar Bergman in the show.

Bartnikowski’s Don Juan is a liar, sinner and seducer. As soon as he abducts Donna Elvira from a convent, he is planning further erotic conquests, scheming to kidnap somebody else’s sweetheart and lure two village girls to bed. But does this reckless adventurer have the audacity to confront Death?

The cast includes Irena Jun, Natalia Sakowicz and Marcin Bikowski, who also animates the puppets.
