Demons From the Past

Article's tools:

The Jewish Theater in Warsaw is staging Ruchele is Getting Married by Savyon Liebrecht, one of the most popular contemporary Israeli playwrights.

After years of being alone, Ruchele, the heroine of the play, finally finds the man of her life and intends to marry him. Unexpectedly, a secret from the past stands in the way of happiness.

The play is about memory and forgiveness, generational conflict and confronting demons from the past. Liebrecht skilfully shows how war trauma is difficult to deal with, while the sins of adults also become the sins of the young generation. A difficult subject is tackled with seriousness combined with tactful humor.

Ruchele is Getting Married is an intimate play that tells us that we cannot run away from the past, but that we have to bravely meet the challenge head on. Even though the story takes place in Israel, it has a universal dimension.

Liebrecht was born in Germany in 1948. Her parents were Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust and who moved to Israel in 1950.

The play has been translated into Polish by Michał Sobelman and is directed by Jacek Papis.
