Ennio Morricone, hailed as one of the world’s greatest movie score composers, is coming to Poland to give a one-night-only concert at the Kraków Arena in Cracow Feb. 14.

The gig is a date on Morricone’s two-month tour of Europe that marks his 50th anniversary as a world famous composer. On the 50 Years of Music tour, Morricone is accompanied by soprano Susanna Rigaci, an orchestra and a choir. The Polish concert will also feature a special guest performance by Portuguese vocalist Dulce Pontes. Morricone will conduct the 170-piece orchestra and choir through a collection of famous pieces, including his signature themes from The Untouchables; Once Upon a Time in the West; A Fistful of Dynamite; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; Cinema Paradiso; The Mission; and Malena.

Arguably the most prolific composer in the movie industry, Morricone has been influenced by classical music, jazz, pop, rock, electronic and avant-garde music and the folk music of Italy, his home country. His sophisticated compositions give a special flavor to movies, best exemplified by the Sergio Leone westerns that Morricone made memorable through the use of instruments such as the mouth harp, out-of-tune harmonicas, flutes, loud trumpets and church organs, in addition to eerie whistling sounds and choral chants.

Highly valued by filmmakers, Morricone is a living legend. He has been nominated for the Academy Award five times, and in 2007 he received a lifetime achievement Academy Award for the over 500 movie scores he has produced. In addition to the honorary Oscar, Morricone has a number of other prestigious awards under his belt, including two Grammies, two Golden Globes and five BAFTA awards.
