TR Warszawa puts Cassavetes’s Opening Night on stage
April 7, 2014
Grzegorz Jarzyna, one of Poland’s best-known theater directors, has come up with a long-awaited stage adaptation of John Cassavetes’s script for the 1977 movie Opening Night.
Entitled Druga Kobieta (The Second Woman), the play will be staged at TR Warszawa, one of Poland’s most innovative theaters, starting April 12.
The new play is directed by Jarzyna, the artistic director of TR Warszawa. The original script has been adapted for the stage by Zofia Go³±bek.
This is a story of a personal confrontation with the problem of passing time as well as the relation between art and life.
An aging actress, Wiktoria, does not want to come into terms with the role assigned to her on stage and in life. She is reticent to take up a role in a Broadway show where she would have to play a woman undergoing menopause. She does not want to give in to the destructive effect of time and tries to escape the truth about herself.
In order to understand and accept herself she will have to say goodbye to a teenage woman, she used to be and who now comes back to her in the figure of her female fan who died in a tragic way.
It is never obvious in this multilayer narrative what the reality and what the play is. Wikoria’s partner on stage - Adam - is also her ex-partner in life. Their conflicts from real life continue behind the stage.
The banal truth about the theater as a mirror of reality gets a new fresh look here. The play shows that the theater can be a place where one can get to know and understand oneself
Music for the new production has been composed by Jacek Grudzieñ, Piotr Domiñski and Dominika Kotarba, while the sets have been designed by Chasper Bertschinger and costumes by Anna Nykowska.
The cast includes some of Poland’s finest theater actors: Danuta Stenka (as Wiktoria), Adam Woronowicz (as Adam), Roma G±siorowska, Maria Maj, Agnieszka Podsiadlik, Danuta Szaflarska, Justyna Wasilewska, Jan Dravnel, Roman Gancarczyk, Rafa³ Maækowiak, Dawid Ogrodnik, Lech £otocki and Sebastian Pawlak.
