The winners of the sixth annual Tech Trends poll held by Poland’s Focus and Chip magazines were announced at a gala ceremony at Warsaw’s Copernicus Science Center April 8.

Readers of the two monthlies voted online for what they consider the most interesting innovations and products available on the market.

Readers of Focus magazine voted for scientists and inventors in three categories. In the medical innovations category, the most votes went to Prof. Szczepan Zapotoczny and his team at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, who developed an additive to plastics that has antibacterial properties. The additive uses nanoparticles of silver and is environmentally friendly. The new material can be used in medical equipment.

In the technical innovations category, Dr. Marek Krzaczek and his team from the Gdańsk University of Technology won the most votes for developing an inexpensive system to heat buildings.

The IT innovations award went to an “e-food” application that scans bar codes to check the composition and ingredients contained in a food product. The application also contains a list of food additives with a description of their qualities and any potentially harmful effects. The application is available for iOS and Android systems.

Meanwhile, Chip magazine readers voted for their favorite innovative products, devices and technologies.

The winners included: the Logitech K480 Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard; the Canon EOS 7D Mark II camera; the Nikon D3300 camera; the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB (STDR2000203) external hard drive; the Samsung Galaxy Gear S smartwatch; the Skype Translate program for instant translation; the Allegro online shopping site; the AMD FX-8370E processor; the Lenovo Yoga 3 laptop; the Windows 8.1 operating system; the Xperia Z3 waterproof smartphone; the Asus Zenfone 5 smartphone; and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S Android-based tablet computer.
