The Hospital That Stores Summer Heat
June 3, 2015
Article's tools:

A seasonal thermal energy storage facility, one just several installations of this kind in Europe, has been put into operation at a hospital in Z±bki near Warsaw.

The Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) facility will enable the hospital to make use of renewable energy sources. The new facility will meet 60 percent of the building’s annual demand for thermal energy.

The project was co-financed by the European Commission and carried out by construction company Mostostal Warszawa in partnership with the Mazovia Energy Agency and the CIM-mesProjekt and ICOP companies.

The facility offers 800 cubic meters of storage space. It can collect about 167.6 GJ of thermal energy in spring and summer. It is isolated from the ground by a layer of cellular glass, which prevents heat loss. The facility is 14 meters in diameter (including the isolating layer) and 8 meters in height.

The storage facility is connected to a system of solar panels with a total area of 150 square meters. It collects thermal energy in an environmentally friendly manner without generating emissions.

When the weather turns cold, the hospital will use solar energy collected in summer and stored in the facility. “This is a pilot project, a first for Poland and one of a few of its kind in Europe. Next to the storage facility, there are fields of solar panels, a hydraulics network and installations, a modernized boiler house, and a prototype heat pump,” says Juliusz Żach, head of the R&D department at Mostostal.

The installation is equipped with a complex monitoring system to analyze its energy efficiency.
