Polish mining sector suffers around PLN 150m loss in Q1

Poland's mining sector incurred a loss of around PLN 150 million in Q1 2014, deputy Economy Minister Witold Petrewicz said in the Sejm lower house on Thursday.

The Q1 price of coal sold fell to PLN 288 per ton from around PLN 292 per ton at the end of 2013, while the price of thermal coal sold decreased to PLN 257.5 from PLN 262, the official said.

At the end of the quarter Poland had 7.5 million tons of coal on stockpiles, i.e. 1 million tons more than at end-2013.

Coal output in Q1 amounted to around 18 million tons with the production cost at PLN 303 per ton.
