A zl.36 million Center of Applied Sciences, one of the most modern scientific institutions in Poland, is under construction in the southern city of Chorzów in a project co-financed by the European Union.

The center, which is scheduled to be completed later this year, will house laboratories for research into chemical technology and “smart” materials. It will also house interdisciplinary labs that will conduct research in the fields of physics, chemistry and materials science. The facility will also conduct research on cancer drugs and on metal alloys to be used in medical prostheses.

The new facility, which will be more than 5,000 sq m in size, will be part of the Silesian Intercollegiate Center for Education and Interdisciplinary Research, which currently comprises two units: a teaching unit and a research unit. The new Center of Applied Sciences will be the complex’s third unit and will be connected with the other two, which were built from 2010 to 2011.

The Center of Applied Sciences is being built by Polish construction company Mostostal Warszawa, which also handled the construction of the other two units of the Silesian Intercollegiate Center for Education and Interdisciplinary Research.

Work to build the Center of Applied Sciences got under way in March this year when a cornerstone was laid for the facility.

The center will use solar power to produce hot water, which will make it possible to reduce maintenance costs.

The new facility will be built in a project co-financed by the European Union under the European Regional Development Fund.
