Article's tools:

Mateusz Pakuła was awarded the prestigious Gdynia Drama Prize for his play „The Sad Tropics” last Sunday during a ceremony held in the Witold Gombrowicz City Theater in Gdynia.

”The Sad Tropics” tells a story of modern Europeans, functioning in a virtual reality, who decide to embark on a journey to the exotic parts of the world hoping to find the illusive authenticity of experience”.
Pakuła was recognized for „depicting a reality in which the scenes of anguish of the Others and their foreign worlds become illusions of an authentic experience for the protagonists”.

„The lively and inventive language of the drama reveals the impossibility of authentic communication”, the verdict read.

It was the first prize for the 31-year-old Pakuła who was shortlisted for the award four times before.

The Gdynia Drama Prize is one of the most prestigious awards for Polish drama. This year the jury comprised of four theatre critics: Dorota Sajewska, Jacek Kopciński, Grzegorz Niziołek and Jacek Sieradzki, and a renown actor and director Jerzy Stuhr, who chose the winning play from among some 230 dramas.
