The new Mitsubishi Outlander is the Japanese automaker’s first model based on its “Dynamic Shield” concept. This aims to offer passengers a high level of protection through the introduction of more than a hundred structural and stylistic modifications designed to improve safety and comfort.

Looking at the 2016 Outlander you are tempted to say—at last! The refreshed vehicle looks far more attractive than its predecessor, despite the fact that its exterior dimensions have barely changed (4,695 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width and 1,673 mm in height). The new stylistic impression of power has been achieved thanks to a set of revisions that redesigned the entire front fascia from the grille to the bumper, the LED headlights, all the way to the reshaped chrome-plated fenders. The revamp has made the body appear more slender. Also, the rear of the vehicle has been redesigned with new LED headlights and chrome-plated tailgate molding. The Outlander is now more compact and dynamic, and the total package looks great.

As part of its Dynamic Shield concept, Mitsubishi has redesigned and modified various structural components so that the vehicle is as comfortable and safe as possible. For this purpose, more than a hundred improvements have been introduced not only in the design of the body, the drivetrain, steering system and suspension, but the automaker also made sure to use cutting-edge safety technology to protect passengers from the impact of collisions and accidents. The Outlander is equipped with a Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) system, a Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Active Stability Control (ASC), and Forward Collision Mitigation (FCMS), in addition to active headrests and seven airbags.

The passenger compartment is roomy thanks to redesigned front and back seats. The car can seat five adult passengers in comfort and has two retractable seats in the cargo floor area that can be used for taking on board an extra two passengers of smaller stature. What immediately strikes the eye is the quality of the finishing materials. The dashboard is not exactly unique in terms of design, but perhaps that’s exactly why it is clear and legible. The driver has no problem finding a comfortable position behind the wheel and visibility from the driver’s seat is exemplary as well.

Under the hood, the test-drive unit was fitted with a 2.2-liter/150 hp diesel engine that generated 360 Nm of torque in the 1,500-2,750 rpm range. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 11.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 190 kph. While these figures are hardly impressive, they are sufficient for the Outlander to effectively negotiate both paved roads and not-very-difficult offroad terrain (the ground clearance is 20 cm), considering that the vehicle weighs in at 1,610 kg. The passenger cabin is quiet due to the body and chassis design combined with various noise control materials including thick sound-absorbing windows (which, by the way, add to the vehicle’s weight). The test-drive model had power distributed electronically between all the wheels by a six-speed automatic transmission that worked smoothly, changing gears without the driver even noticing.

The new Outlander is entering the market at an exceptionally difficult time amid stiff competition in the SUV segment. The next few months will show just to what extent the vehicle will win over customers in Poland.
