Soundscapes in Visual Art

Retuning: Leszek Knaflewski and Soundscapes at the Ujazdowski Castle Center for Contemporary Art is the first Warsaw presentation of work by a great visual artist and teacher following his death last year. The exhibition also presents works by artists who were students at the Soundscape Studio that Knaflewski headed.

“Knaflewski was not only a charismatic individual but also a teacher who initiated an experimental program that included working with sonic matter in visual arts, and who developed an intuition-based method of collaborating with students,” says exhibition curator Jarosław Lubiak. “He treated them as equal partners in artistic practice, cooperated with them, but also engaged in friendly competition.”

Next to Knaflewski’s works, the exhibition showcases works by artists such as Wojciech Bàkowski, Daniel Koniusz, Tomasz Koszewnik, Dominika Olszowy, Franciszek Orłowski, Konrad Smoleński, Maria Toboła, Honza Zamojski and Aleksandra Ska.

As the organizers put it, the exhibition is a symbolic meeting between Knaflewski and artists who had the opportunity to work with him as students at the Soundscape Studio.
Until Dec. 6
