PiS Wins
November 3, 2015
Article's tools:

The conservative opposition Law and Justice party (PiS) won a decisive victory in Poland’s Oct. 25 parliamentary election, winning 37.58 percent of the vote, well ahead of the ruling center-right Civic Platform (PO) with 24.09 percent.

The results, announced by the State Electoral Commission Oct. 26, mean that five mainstream parties have made it into parliament. But for the first time since Poland shook off communism in 1989 there will be no left-wing party in the lower house.

Trailing PiS and the PO at the ballot box were two new parties: Kukiz’15, an anti-establishment group led by veteran rock star Paweł Kukiz, which secured 8.81 percent of the vote, and the pro-market Nowoczesna (Modern), led by prominent economist Ryszard Petru, which won 7.60 percent of the vote.

The rural-based Polish People’s Party (PSL), scored 5.13 percent.

The radical, anti-EU KORWiN group got 4.76 percent of the vote, just short of the 5-percent voter support threshold needed to get into parliament.

The election results came as a heavy blow to left-wingers, who will have no deputies.

The United Left, comprising a number of leftist groups, garnered 7.55 percent of the vote but, as an election coalition rather than a standalone party, it needed at least 8 percent.

Razem, a newcomer in Polish politics with a radically leftist platform, finished last with 3.62 percent despite some last-minute gains following its leader’s strong performance in a televised debate.
