Polish celebrations of the Year of El Greco commenced with a two-day international academic conference titled„Artin the Times of El Greco” which opened at the Warsaw Royal Castle yesterday.

It is one of the main events of the Polish El Greco Year commemorating the 400 anniversary of the death of the mannerist Renaissance master.
The conference started with lectures on architecture, painting, and sculpture delivered by art historians form Spain: Rosario CamachoMartíneza, José RodaPeña, ÁlvaroRecio Mira,José FernándezaLópeza, and a guest lecturer form Athens: prof. EftychiaFountoulaki.

The only El Greco in Polish collections is a little known painting ‘The Ecstasy of St Francis’ (Ekstaza ¦wiêtego Franciszka). It is owned by the Diocesan Museum of Siedlce, , a town 90 km to the east of Warsaw, which, for the first time ever, will lend it to the Royal Castle for September and October.

This unprecedented exhibition will inaugurate a new project “The Gallery of One Painting”, which will present outstanding works of art from Poland and abroad, displayed for the first time in Poland.

The initiator of the Polish Year of El Greco is the Diocesan Museum of Siedlce, and the co-organizers are the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow and the Warsaw’s Royal Castle.
