La Trama (The Intrigue), a new play at Warsaw’s Kamienica Theater, directed by Jan Englert, is a tale of love, cheating and murder.

The play, by Spanish dramatist Jaime Salom, opens June 14 with a cast of popular Polish actors including Beata Ścibakówna, Szymon Bobrowski and Zbigniew Zamachowski.

The protagonist, a rich businessman on the brink of bankruptcy, decides to fake his own death in order to cash in on his life insurance and start a new life. A phony death certificate is to be signed by a doctor who is having an affair with the businessman’s wife. The businessman promises to disappear so the doctor will be free to marry the “widow.” But things turn out not to be so simple and as new characters arrive on the scene the plot takes several surprising twists. Suspicions, selfishness, hypocrisy, ambition, anger, revenge and cynicism rear their ugly heads and lead to an unexpected conclusion.

Upcoming performances: June 13, 14, 15, 16 and 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Kamienica Theater, 63 Solidarności Ave.
