Brazilian singer Ive Mendes, dubbed the “queen of smooth jazz,” promoted the Polish release of her latest album Bossa Romantica in a sellout concert in Warsaw Nov. 20.

Mendes performed to a packed house at Warsaw’s Narodowy Theater and those who managed to get a ticket were the world’s first audience to hear tracks from the album live. Even though the November cold and damp got the better of the singer’s voice, Mendes did not let her Polish fans down and took them on an atmospheric trip through smooth-jazz, bossa nova, samba and pop.

Bossa Romantica delivers a collection of romantic pop classics with a bossa nova flavor. The new release is a tribute Mendes is paying to Joao and Astrud Gilberto, the pair behind “The Girl from Ipanema,” arguably the world’s most famous bossa nova track.” Mendes gave her trademark sensual rendition of that one, along with such timeless hits as “If You Leave Me Now,” “Natural High,” Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “Besame Mucho.” The velvet-voiced singer was accompanied by a string quartet and an international band of jazz musicians.

That night in Warsaw, Mendes oozed positive energy and between the songs, she shared her thoughts on love and what it meant to her. Taking her final bows, she reminded the listeners to “live life as if it was your last day.”

The Brazilian star had been invited to Poland by the BMW Group, which organized the concert as part of its centennial anniversary celebrations.
