Local budgets strained by expenses on education

Over 93% of local governments are spending more on schools and education than they receive from the central budget, according to the Finance Ministry's data cited by the daily Rzeczpospolita.

Total spending on those purposes last year hit PLN 61.1 billion, way above the total budget subsidy of PLN 39.5 billion.

Costs are mainly elevated by teacher remunerations and privileges. Local governments want some of those privileges to be liquidated. The Education Ministry has prepared a draft amendment to the Teacher's Charter, which could be debated by MPs in the summer but the date is not fixed yet.
