Ninety Years of Sofitel Grand Sopot
January 4, 2018
Article's tools:

The five-star Sofitel Grand Sopot celebrates its 90th anniversary. The hotel's exceptional style and façade are unfalteringly delightful. To this day, it is a venue for historic events and elegant receptions, visited by world-famous guests from the musical, political and business worlds.

In 1927, Sopot's Lord Mayor described the newly opened Grand Hotel as the largest and most elegant in North Europe. And according to Gazeta Gdaƒska: "The massive and stylish building has an imposing presence overlooking the beach. Part of the drive, hall, seafront terraces, cafeteria with a confectionery as well as 35 rooms comprising 50 beds have been made available for SPA tourists."

This classic example of modernist resort architecture, right in the heart of Poland's most fashionable Baltic Sea resort is one of the most recognisable images of the Polish seaside.

"Sofitel Grand Sopot is an exceptional place, in every aspect", emphasises Gregory Millon, the hotel's director. "Its seafront location and the soothing murmur of the surf means guests are always looking forward to their stay. The Sofitel brand combines local culture with a "French spirit", which is evident in the elegant interiors and service par excellence", adds Millon.

Following its most recent refurbishment, the hotel enchants with its unique style and atmosphere. Frédéric Yzerman, an acknowledged French architect, worked on the interior designs. The lobby, restaurant, pool and hotel rooms took on a contemporary character without shaking off their original style. The beautifully refurbished interiors deliver an unforgettable experience, and the hotel's unique character is made up of 127 air-conditioned, comfortable and elegant sea-view or park-view rooms.

A combination of historic beauty with the convenience of French elegance is what sets the Sofitel brand apart, all around the world. Sofitel Grand Sopot is one of the 120 hotels operating under that brand, spread across 40 countries and five continents, primarily in national capitals and the most famous tourist destinations.

A spacious Art Deco restaurant is also one of the features of Sofitel Grand Sopot, where chef Tomasz Koprowski composes dishes which bring together the Polish and the French art of cooking. Le Bar dazzles with its choice of exquisite cocktails. Guests have a private beach at their disposal, can enjoy a fountain-studded garden, relax in a Grand SPA, exercise at the SoFIT gym or use an indoor pool.

The hotel also boasts the most beautiful ballroom in Trójmiasto. The Baccarat crystal chandeliers were part of the original 1927 design. From the outset this was the venue for unforgettable events. In the 1970s these included elegant press balls, with three orchestras playing. One would play hits, another jazz and the third Gypsy music.

Music has accompanied Sopot's Grand Sopot right from the outset. In June 1927, during the ceremonial opening, Erich Borchardt's Yankee Jazz Band played for the assembled guests. Famous dance parties, in Polish known as "fajfa" were part of its pre- and post-war tradition. It was here that the artistic life of the Sopot International Song Festival converged.

Throughout its history, the hotel has hosted numerous luminaries: crown heads (King Alfonso XIII of Spain), statesmen (Charles de Gaulle, Henry Kissinger, Mohammad Reza Pahlawi) as well as world-renowned stage and film stars (Greta Garbo, Marlena Dietrich, Omar Sharif, Annie Lennox, Charles Aznavour, Josephine Baker, Karel Gott, Helena Vondrác˘ková, Boney M band, Sting, Shakira).

Today, Sofitel Grand Sopot is an icon of the Polish coastline. It is synonymous with luxury and elegance. It is also a place for travellers looking for exceptional aesthetic experiences.
