Krystyna Meissner, the artistic director of International Theater Festival Dialog, will be awarded the prestigious Goethe Medal on August 28 in Weimar, central Germany.

The Goethe Medal is a German state decoration funded by the Goethe-Institut, given to non-Germans in recognition of „outstanding service for the German language and international cultural relations”. Some of its previous laureates include: 20th-century philosophers Pierre Bourdieu and Karl Popper, American filmmaker Billy Wilder, and British spy fiction writer David Cornwell (John le Carre).

Meissner is a Polish theater director, and organizer of two international theater festivals – “Kontakt” in Toruń, northern Poland, and “ Dialog” in western Polish city of Wrocław. “She made the presence of German theater more visible in Poland, at the same time contributing to the discovery of Eastern European theater in Western Europe”, the Goethe Medal nomination for Meissner reads.

This year the award will be also given to an American Robert Wilson, a theater director and playwright, and, posthumously, to Gerard Mortier, a Belgian opera director and administrator of many institutions of culture.
