SUV, the French Way

It offers an attractive body, a spacious interior, and ample standard equipment. But will the Renault Koleos be able to stand up to the competition in the SUV segment?

The sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment is among the fastest growing in the automotive market. Such vehicles are highly sought after not only in Poland, but across Europe. Customers are drawn by their looks, performance (which often includes four wheel drive) and functionality. Vehicle manufacturers who keep close tabs on market trends know full well that SUVs have been in style for a number of years. These days, you'd be hard pressed to find a car manufacturer which doesnít have at least a few SUVs in its range.

The Renault Koleos is a family-friendly, mid-size SUV. Its 4.67 m long chassis offers plenty of room. Though itís certainly a matter of taste, itís difficult not to notice the Koleosí elegant and sleek appearance. The imposing logo on the front grille, the LED headlights, the rear lights extending deep into the tailgate Ė these have become the tell-tale signs by which all Renault models are recognised.

The spacious interior easily accommodates five adults. There is no shortage of room in the front bucket or rear bench seats. The regular shape boot offers 498 l of space, which isnít as much as it could be, (1615 l is available with the back seats folded). The rear seats fold down only in a 60/40 configuration. However, the plethora of standard equipment more than makes up for this. On top of the standard spec, the top of the range Initiale Paris model comes with leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated back seats, parking assist, a professional sound system and a glass roof for that extra touch to make your journey even more exciting. The elegant and uncluttered dashboard is impressive with its two large screens. An 8.7 inch vertical infotainment screen is found in the central panel, with a second, 7 inch display for the clock.

Two turbocharged engines are available. The tested model was equipped with the stronger, 2 l turbo-diesel delivering 177 BHP. It boasts a top speed of 201 km/h and reaches 100km/h in 9.5 seconds. According to the manufacturer, its average fuel consumption is 5.9l/100km. However, our tests showed a somewhat poorer result. We managed 8.5l/100km, which still seems satisfactory taking into account the size, four wheel drive powertrain, and curb weight (1750 kg) of the Koleos.

Will Koleos make the cut? It certainly will. Perhaps it will fall short of the top spot in terms of sales, but it will undoubtedly bring joy to many drivers, and not only Francophiles.
