Review of master adaptations of Sarah Kane’s dramas at TR Warszawa
June 27, 2014
TR Warszawa, one of Warsaw’s leading theaters will hold in July a review of its phenomenal adaptations of Sarah Kane’s dramas, including „4.48 Psychosis” directed by the theater’s artistic director Grzegorz Jarzyna (July 3-5) and „Cleansed” directed by another prominent Polish theater director Krzysztof Warlikowski (July 9-13).
Co-produced by TR Warszawa and Teatr Polski in Poznań the play premiered in February 2002. It has no explicit characters or stage directions. The play's main subject is clinical depression, a disorder from which Kane suffered. She killed herself after writing the play, before its initial performance.
“Everyone, whether they like it or not, must face pain and despair, which are usually avoided in everyday life, and of which we try to forget. Such scenes take place behind closed doors of apartments and hospital wards. The actors of TR Warszawa impudently open these doors to say „Validate me/ Witness me/ See me/ Love me". 4.48 Psychosis is a test to contemporary theatre. Can we see a person, not an actor on the stage? Can we notice a genuine pain behind lines of text, which make up literature? Is theater simply an instrument of peeping at others, or does it give us more than the convenience and safety of a peeping Tom? The performance directed by Jarzyna leaves these questions open to us,” writes Roman Pawłowski in Gazeta Wyborcza daily.
The cast: includes: Magdalena Cielecka, Katarzyna Herman, Rafał Maćkowiak, Lech Łotocki i Adam Woronowicz.
upcoming performances: July 3, 4 and 5 at 8pm
approximate running time: 1 hour (no intermission)
In July TR will also show, after three-year break, the outstanding interpretation of “Cleansed.” the powerful play by Kane. As a theater critic Roman Pawłowski wrote in Gazeta Wyborcza daily this is a breakthrough play in the Polish theater which changed the meaning of such words as violence, love, pain and death. “It’s a journey towards the inside of a contemporary human being who cannot cope with own demons. It’s a cleansing session of psychoanalysis after which both theater and life are not the same. Warlikowski’s staging, like the play itself, touches the darkest sides of human nature.
In Cleansed, Kane explores the theme of love, testing her characters by putting them in a concentration camp where they are subjected to horrendous atrocities. The group of inmates try to save themselves through love.
The main story is about Grace’s search for her brother Graham, an addict who’s been murdered by Tinker, a sadistic guard or doctor at the institution.
