Polish archbishop defrocked for child sex abuse
June 30, 2014
A Roman Catholic Church tribunal ordered a Polish archbishop Jozef Wesolowski convicted of sexual abuse of children in the Dominican Republic to be defrocked, the Vatican said on Friday.
Wesolowski, 65, a former Vatican nuncio or ambassador to the Caribbean nation since 2008, is the first senior Church official stripped of the priesthood for sexual abuse.
Wesolowski, who was recalled to Rome by Pope Francis last August amid accusations that he sexually abused a number of minors in the slums of Santo Domingo, was found guilty in a canonical trial by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican said on Friday.
If found guilty in a criminal trial, Wesolowski could risk extradition to the Dominican Republic, which has appointed a special prosecutor of its own to investigate the case.
