Warlikowski’s adaption of Cleansed at TR Warszawa

Article's tools:

TR Warszawa, one of Warsaw’s leading theaters is showing in July, after a three-year break, its phenomenal adaptation of Sarah Kane’s powerful play „Cleansed”, directed by a prominent Polish theater director Krzysztof Warlikowski.

As a theater critic Roman Pawłowski wrote in Gazeta Wyborcza daily this is a breakthrough play in the Polish theater which changed the meaning of such words as violence, love, pain and death. “It’s a journey towards the inside of a contemporary human being who cannot cope with own demons. It’s a cleansing session of psychoanalysis after which both theater and life are not the same. Warlikowski’s staging, like the play itself, touches the darkest sides of human nature.

In Cleansed, Kane explores the theme of love, testing her characters by putting them in a concentration camp where they are subjected to horrendous atrocities.

The group of inmates try to save themselves through love.
The main story is about Grace’s search for her brother Graham, an addict who’s been murdered by Tinker, a sadistic guard or doctor at the institution.

A known Polish theater critic Łukasz Drewniak wrote in PRZEKRÓJ weekly:
The world seen through the eyes of the characters – social outcasts locked in a social rehabilitation institution – is quite shocking. It cannot be denied. Still, Kane and Warlikowski do not claim they own the key to the absolute truth about the world. All they do is to open to us yet another door to reality, the way Strindberg or the Angry Young Men used to do, cause, once again, the borders between what’s moral and immoral have shifted. The director of Cleansed shows us the truth about the contemporary theater which no longer teaches us how to be moral and does not discuss with the past. It does not want to be analyzed by scientists nor does it force anybody to scrabble in the box with scenic ideas. It does not soothe anything inside of the spectator, the theater’s therapeutic role is gone forever. And it must be said that the performance is not to bring the pleasure of watching it. It is not what retired Polish intellectuals could expect, it is not a family entertainment either. There is no sense of community among the audience. It is just you and the play. And you have to deal with the awkward message of Cleansed on your own.

The cast includes : Stanisława Celińska (actress of Nowy Theater in Warsaw), Małgorzata Hajewska - Krzysztofik, Renate Jett, Mariusz Bonaszewski, Redbad Klijnstra, Jacek Poniedziałek (actor of Nowy Theater in Warsaw), Tomasz Tyndyk, Thomas Schweiberer/ Tomasz Wygoda.

co-produced by TR Warszawa, Teatr Współczesny in Wrocław, Teatr Polski in Poznań
The approximate running time: 2h 40 (no intermission)

Only for adult audiences

upcoming performances: July 9-13, at 8pm
