Warsaw Summer Jazz Days 2014 kick off
July 9, 2014
This year’s Warsaw Summer Jazz Days festival will be held July 9-13 at the Soho Factory, a postindustrial quarter in Warsaw, featuring a mix of young musicians and celebrated jazz classics.
The festival will kick off with a concert by the Polish group SBB, which recently reunited in its original lineup with violinist Micha³ Urbaniak.
Performers scheduled to play July 10 are Swedish pianist Nik Baertsch with his band and Dutch-born pianist Gerald Clayton with his trio. The last concert of the day will be performed by Now This, an excellent trio formed by jazz improvisers Gary Peacock (double-bass), Joey Baron (drums), and Marc Copland (piano).
The next festival day will start with a gig by the trio of W³odek Pawlik, a Polish pianist who earlier this year won a Grammy award for the album Night in Calisia. Then, drummer Jack DeJohnette will play in a trio with bassist Matt Garrison and sax player Ravi Coltrane, the son of the legendary John Coltrane.
In the evening of July 11, Warsaw audiences will hear a supergroup consisting of Dave Holland (double-bass), Craig Taborn (piano), Kevin Eubanks (guitar), and Eric Harland (drums).
Concerts on Saturday July 12 will feature a fine lineup of young, but accomplished jazz performers. American vibraphonist Warren Wolf is coming to Warsaw with his Wolfpack group, whose other members are Joe Sanders (bass), Justin Brown (drums) and Aaron Goldberg (piano). The next concert will be by the trio of vocalist and trumpeter Joey DeFrancesco, who is also a Hammond organ virtuoso, and the day will end with a gig by the Liberty Ellman Quintet fronted by impromptu performer and guitarist Liberty Ellman.
The last day of the festival will begin with a concert by Maltese guitarist Sandro Zerafa, who lives in Paris. Scheduled to play next are the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble from Chicago, a magnificent jazz and funk group formed by eight sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran.
The festival will close with a concert by Grammy-winning American vocalist Gregory Porter, who skillfully combines the soul legacy of 1970s’ America with contemporary jazz.
